چکیده

In management theory of the last decades, much importance has been attached to a process-oriented perspective on organizational (re)structuring. Yet to date, organizations still experience difficulties in applying this process-oriented perspective to the design and maintenance information systems. The root of the problem lies with a procedural representation of business processes that contains inadequate information for computer systems to provide flexible automated business process support. The counterpart of a procedural representation is a declarative one that explicitly takes into account the business concerns that govern business processes. Recently, a number of process modeling languages have appeared that could be identified as declarative languages. These modeling languages have very distinct knowledge representation backgrounds, often lack a formal execution model and often only model one aspect of the many business concerns that exist in reality. What is needed are meaningful ways to combine several kinds of expressions, called business rule types, independently of the used methods for knowledge representation and reasoning. In this paper, we present the EM-BrACE (Enterprise Modeling using Business Rules, Agents, Activities, Concepts and Events) Framework, a unifying vocabulary and execution model for declarative process modeling. The vocabulary is described in terms of the Semantics for Business Vocabulary and Rules (SBVR) standard and the execution model is presented as a Colored Petri Net (CP-Net). In addition, we show how declarative process models can contribute to the model-driven design of Service-Oriented Architectures. keywords: Business Process Management, Business Modeling, Service Modeling, SBVR, Service-Oriented Architecture

Declarative Process Modeling with Business Vocabulary and Business Rules

A process modeling language is declarative when it explicitly takes into account the business concerns that govern business processes. In this paper, we show how business concerns can be modeled declaratively using a fact-oriented business vocabulary that allows to express sixteen different business rule types. In particular, we present the EMBrACE Framework, an extension of the SBVR that allow...

Unified Patterns to Transform Business Rules into an Event Coordination Mechanism

Business rules define and constrain various aspects of the business, such as vocabulary, behavior and organizational issues. Enforcing the various rules of the business in information systems is not straightforward, because different mechanisms exist for the transformation of business rules into model driven implementations, leading to partial solutions for process management, data constraints,...

Knowledge Management using Business Process Modeling and Workflow Techniques

Enterprise Modeling (EM) methods are recognised for their value in providing a more organised way to describe a complex, informal domain. A problem with EM is that it does not always provide direct input for software system development. There is a “gap” between EM and software systems. One way of bridging this gap is to provide a formalisation, here called that subsumes a wide variety of core m...

Vocabularies, ontologies, and rules for enterprise and business process modeling and management

Vocabularies, ontologies, and business rules are key components of a model-driven approach to enterprise computing in a networked economy. Enterprise vocabularies, ontologies, and business rules do not exist in isolation but serve to support business processes. While many have recognized the importance of vocabularies, ontologies, and business rules in business process modeling and management, ...
